Fernando Pacheco: Artista de Yucatan / Yucatan Artist

While on this recent visit to Yucatan, came across the work of Fernando Pacheco. I found some of the main characteristics that I love in art that can be summed in word: purposeful. His art is political and socially critical; it conveys a meaning.

In this case, his art displayed in a Government building in the center square of Merida (capital of Yucatan), are scenes of the indigenous plight and conquest of Mexico.

Strong images in colour that in many ways reflect the current situation in the country; and in doing such they are relevant. My only commentary would be, and to borrow notes from Andres Oppenheimer, the Argentine journalist in his latest book, we need to stop looking at the past and look to the future. The murals then to have a proper conclusion to the sequence needed to look at the future. I understand that there is a need to reminesce on the past, yet, there is a threshold of sufficiency; that threshold has been crossed long ago
