Ilha de Mocambique – Part III: the House

front of the house / frente da casa

In a small town in Madagascar near the coast, called Manakara, I drew a woman sitting on the beach contemplating the ocean in front of her. This woman was full of ideas, heavy thoughts and much more. Her name was Beatrix.

At Fatima’s in Maputo, I met a young German guy about same age as myself with his Kombi in the parking lot. We had some long conversations walking the streets of Maputo. Many months later we would meet again in Vilankulos. His name was Uwe.

And so as way leads unto way, on our last week on the island, Beatrix and I purchased a house on the island, a bit decayed, unkept, but with lots of potential. For long time it sat idle as restoration required capital of which none of us had.  Yet, Uwe eventually arrived, after some other projects we eventually had a conversation and managed to put together a project that lasted a few years until now. After almost 2-3 years of work, the house has been restored and leased to Uwe to pursue his goal of having a backpackers on the island; Ruby’s backpackers is born.

  1. Hi Wilbert,

This place looks great! I lived on the island for 2 months in 2009 at the same time as Freddie Brunt, and that is how I found your blog. The island is absolutely magical and I cannot start to describe what I feel when I think about it. No matter how many places I visit, I never seem to find the same kind of peace and beauty I did in the island. Ilha de Mocambique really is one of a kind.
I just wanted to congratulate you on your beautiful pictures, hostel and above everything else, Projecto Oceano. Sara
